Child support (or 'child maintenance') is the payment that many non-resident parents (mostly fathers) make towards to the costs of raising their children after parental separation. While most child support schemes are now well established, many continue to be 'modernised' in a bid to improve the balance between adequacy and equity and to adapt to changing social trends. The Australian Child Support Scheme is a case in point. Sweeping reforms were recently introduced, featuring a dramatically different - albeit more complex - system for the calculation of child support and an enhanced compliance regime. Other schemes (eg. the UK system) have also undergone significant change in recent years. Not surprisingly, there is considerable policy and public interest in the impact of these reforms on families - particularly in relation to child wellbeing.

The Journal of Family Studies invites article submissions for a special issue on child support to be published in April 2010. Local and international researchers from a range of disciplines are strongly encouraged to submit original papers on such topics as:
